Motability Scheme

What is the Motability scheme?

The Motability Scheme was set up by the registered charity, Motability, to support disabled people and their families with safe and reliable access to mobility. Through the scheme, anyone with a qualifying benefit can use the Motability scheme to lease a car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, mobility scooter, or powered wheelchair.

How does the Motability scheme work?

The Motability Scheme provides disabled people with the ability to exchange their mobility allowance to lease one of the vehicles listed above.

Qualifying benefits that could make you eligible for this scheme include::

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

One requirement to be eligible is that you do need at least 12 months remaining on your award to be able to qualify for the scheme.

What are the benefits of using the Motability scheme?

One of the biggest benefits of using the Motability scheme is that almost all additional costs associated with leasing a vehicle are accounted for as part of the deal. This includes:

  • Insurance with a reputable provider
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • RAC breakdown cover
  • the optional extra of Motability arranging your annual car tax

If you lease a car or a wheelchair accessible vehicle, the scheme also includes:

  • Window and windscreen repairs
  • An allowance of 20,000 miles per year of the lease
  • Adaptation options

Are there any disadvantages to using the Motability scheme?

Motability does place a 60,000 mileage limit over your three-lease period. If you exceed this mileage, 5p is added for every additional mile. This is worth bearing in mind if you think you may use your vehicle more than that in the three-year lease. Overwhelmingly, this is the most common negative feedback you will see regarding the scheme and a limit many users do find quite restrictive. This is particularly for users who lease a car through the scheme that they rely on to commute to work.

With that said, the benefits of having any car problems, adaptations, and administration handled on your behalf is an element many people who use the scheme find far outweighs the negatives.

How do I join the Motability scheme?

The Motability scheme has over 4,500 dealerships across the UK, all of whom have partnered with the scheme and should be well informed with setting customers up with their lease.

Using the Motability scheme will mean that your benefit goes directly to the scheme in exchange for your lease of a powered wheelchair/scooter or vehicle. To join the scheme, you’ll need to search for a dealership near you and then choose the vehicle you need (mobility scooter, car etc), test drive it etc.

Before going to look at vehicles, it’s a good idea to have evidence that you qualify for the scheme ready. When visiting dealerships, you’ll need to provide:

  • ID (driver’s license or passport)
  • Your certificate of entitlement from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)

Once you have settled on the vehicle you need, the dealership should have a Motability specialist who can guide you through the process and get everything set up for you. You can also find out more about the scheme on the official Motability website.
